Well-known economist Abhijit Sen dies at age 72

Abhijit Sen, a well-known economist and former Planning Commission member, died late on Monday night from a heart attack. He was 72.

Sen spent four decades teaching economics at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and later holding a number of significant positions.

He served as a member of the Planning Commission from 2004 to 2014 during the UPA administration, and in 1997, 

during the United Front Government's term in office,

he served as head of the Agriculture Ministry's Commission on Agricultural Cost and Prices (CACP).

He tasked CACP under him with formulating minimum support price recommendations for a range of commodities.

Sen taught economics at Oxford, Cambridge, Sussex, and Essex before joining JNU's centre for economic studies in 1985.
